Confession – for the longest time since the lockdown, I would inevitably end up applying a bit of makeup each time I had to step out of my house to run errands, only to realise halfway through the process that the whole point is lost. Why? Well, because no one would really be able to see the details of the minimal makeup routine I swear by. Also, by the time I return, it would all be smudged in any case (thanks, face masks).

But does this mean I gave up on wearing makeup while wearing a face mask? Absolutely not! Instead, I came up with some clever makeup hacks and tips that not only prevent my makeup from smudging under the mask but also ensures that I can maintain my sense of normalcy in these strange times. And luckily for you, I’m going to share my tried and tested tips with you on how to transfer-proof your makeup while wearing a protective face mask.

01. Use long-lasting formulas

01. Use long-lasting formulas

If you prefer a super dewy and fresh base, then sorry to say but there isn’t much you can do to prevent that from smudging. But, investing in a matte finish and long-wearing foundations and concealers will ensure that they actually sink into your skin and settle to a dry finish; thereby, making them less prone to smudging. Additionally, layering powder formulas over creams ensure that they last a lot longer.

02. Set your makeup

After you’re done applying your makeup, dust a bit of loose powder all over your face and neck using a makeup sponge or a big fluffy brush. Applying powder over matte products could make you look chalky, but by really buffing a very lightweight powder formula right into your skin will ensure that your makeup stays in place all day.

03. Use a primer and setting spray

03. Use a primer and setting spray

Primers and setting sprays are total saviours when it comes to preventing your makeup from moving under your mask. Apply a lightweight, hydrating primer before going in with your base makeup. This not only ensures that your makeup clings to the primer to prevent smudging, but also gives your skin a clearer and smoother appearance. After you’re done with your makeup, spritz on a bit of setting spray over the powder, allow it to dry down completely before wearing your mask to keep your makeup from budging.

04. Use matte lipsticks

04. Use matte lipsticks

If there is one product we miss flaunting the most while wearing a face mask, it has to be lipstick. While it is impossible to prevent your lipstick from smudging entirely, using a matte formula or liquid lipstick lowers the chances quite a bit. Using a matte lipstick that contains hydrating ingredients will keep your lips from turning dry.

05. Play up your eyes

05. Play up your eyes

Since your eyes are the only part of your face that is visible once the mask is on, it only makes sense to accentuate them. You can try anything from soft smokey eyes to coloured eyeshadows to graphic eyeliners to let your eyes do all the talking. Don’t forget to fill in your brows and define your lashes to look wide awake.
