BB: Can you share your experience of starting out as a hair and makeup artist? What were the early days like and how did you make it to the film industry?

SM: I’ve been working in the film industry for four years now. I happened to upload my work on Facebook and somebody saw it. I then got a call to do makeup for actress Ruhi Singh. It was Ruhi’s second film and I got a chance to be on board.

Then, more people started noticing my work and I got more opportunities to work with the bigwigs of B-town. I have worked with celebrities like Diana Penty, Chitrangda Singh, Parineeti Chopra, Dia Mirza, Huma Qureshi, Neha Kakkar, Taapsee Pannu, Mouni Roy and Aditi Rao Hydari, to name a few. I have done three South films and I’m currently working on a Bollywood film.

BB: What are some party makeup hacks you’d like to share with our readers?

SM: Hack #1: Since it’s party season, I’d suggest you carry blotting papers in your handbag. Dancing can make you sweat, so you can simply blot away the excess shine by dabbing the sheet across your face.

Hack #2: Rub ice all over your face before going in with your makeup. Ice will not only reduce the puffiness but also give an instant glow.

Hack #3: Before applying foundation, go in with your contour powder and blush. Apply foundation over it. This will give you a natural look. However, remember that when you put foundation over contour powder and blush, don’t drag the foundation, simply dab it with a makeup sponge.

BB: Can you predict some of the hair and makeup trends that will be big in 2020?

SM: In the makeup department, I think it’s going to be more of colour play. Pop colours like pink, red and neon are going to dominate 2020. More and more people are going to ditch the classic winged eyeliner for something edgier such as graphic or floating eyeliner.

Also, 2020 is going to be big on lip stains. Up until now, dark matte lipsticks ruled the red carpets and runways. 2020 is going to change that with lip stains that have a softer effect, look super dreamy and natural. One runway trend that is going to hit reality in 2020 is going to be the use of studs in makeup.

In the hair department, accessories are going to rule the game once again in 2020. Use of pearls, crystals, rhinestone hairbands and barrettes are going to be huge.

One hairstyle that will rule 2020 is the slick back braided ponytail. Also, I think bob haircuts are going to be big next year (I just went for a big chop myself).

For those who love long hair, soft natural-looking beachy waves are going to trend.

BB: What makeup look or looks can go best with LBDs?

SM: Look #1: Metallic eyeshadow in green, red or royal blue can work well with your black party dresses. To deck up for a party, I suggest you ditch matte and opt for shimmer.

Look #2: Whether you’re playing up your eyes or lips, don’t forget to add a little bit of sheen on the inner corner of your eyes. This little step can instantly make your eyes look brighter and add more life to your look.

Look #3: If you’re not comfortable wearing heavy eyeshadow pigments or can’t apply like a pro, then you can completely ditch eye makeup and instead opt for a really dark red lip. A classic red or dark pink, anything that’ll make you stand out.

Look #4: If you’re doing just your lips and not eyes, then opt for oodles of highlighter on your cheekbones. Avoid the t-zone area as it can tend to look over-shiny.

BB: 5 easy-to-do party hairstyles you’d recommend for New Year’s Eve that’ll last way past midnight.

SM: #1: High ponytail with Hollywood waves: It’ll add texture and volume to your hair and is a great hairstyle for all those with thin hair.

#2: If you have really short hair, then create a lot of waves and put hair accessories on one side of the hair. Adorn it with pearl or crystal barrettes.

#3: A simple slick back braided ponytail

#4: Half up half down: Instead of keeping it straight, curl the ends for added volume.

#5: Brushed-out waves: With a curling iron, create waves in your hair and then brush them out. Create a deep side parting and add shimmer or glitter accents. Seal it in with a hair gel.

BB: For someone who has only 10 minutes to do their party makeup, what steps according to you could be given a miss?

SM: Firstly, don’t even try going for winged eyeliner. It’s time-consuming and requires more precision.

Secondly, if you have naturally flawless skin, then you can skimp on a foundation and just apply concealer to conceal problem areas such as dark spots and acne.

Thirdly, instead of applying eyeshadow, simply take some lip balm and dab it all over your lids. Add definition with generous coats of mascara. You’ll be ready with a glossy look in a jiffy.

Lastly, avoid the hassle of lipstick and go in with a lip stain. Just take the colour on your fingertips and apply it on the centre of your lips. Go in with the same colour on your cheeks.

BB: Can you share a makeup routine for someone who’s decking up for a party but is a makeup noob?

SM: Step 1: Whether you’re a makeup beginner or a pro, cleansing-toning-moisturising is must for everyone.

Step 2: Use primer. A primer will make your makeup glide on smoothly and last for longer hours.

Step 3: Instead of jumping onto a foundation, first reach for your eyeshadow. Being a beginner, eyeshadow fall-out may just scare you. And, in the process of fixing the fall-out, your skin could turn grey. So, go with eyeshadow first.

If you’re a beginner, use a brown or black eye pencil to draw lines on your lids. Then, take a blending brush to blend it. Fill any other colour you over it. Doing so, will hold the eyeshadow pigment and won’t mess with your eye makeup. It also works as a primer.

Step 4: Next, foundation. For beginners, you can first finish your contouring and blush and then layer it with foundation. Use cream formulas as they are easy to work with, avoid powder.

Step 5: Apply mascara and follow it up with kajal. Alternatively, you can ditch kajal for a brown eye pencil and just smudge it on your lower lash line.

Step 6: Use translucent powder to set your makeup. The translucent powder won’t give you a cakey finish.

Step 7: Apply blush on the centre of your cheeks.

Step 8: Then, with a highlighter, highlight the high points of your face. Avoid the T-zone area. Apply it above the apples of your cheeks, sides of your nose and on the inner corner of your eyes.

Step 9: If your eye makeup is not too heavy, then go for bold lipstick such as a deep wine or red.

If your eye makeup is heavy, then go for a lip colour which is pinkish nude. Avoid flat nude colours as that’ll make you look washed out.

Step 10: Finish off with a makeup setting spray or a rosewater spray.

BB: Share tips to amp up your party hairstyle instantly.

SM: Tip #1: Use dry shampoo on second or third-day hair. This will give your hair instant volume and help you get rid of excess greasiness.

Tip #2: If you want voluminous textured hair, section your hair and braid each section. Then, take a flat iron and run it over each of the braided section. Leave it braided for 10 to 15 minutes, and then untie your braids.

Tip #3: Pull all your hair back and create a messy bun. Leave out a few face-framing strands. Add a hair accessory on the side of your hair to instantly amp up your hairstyle.

BB: Haircuts and hair colours that will be huge in 2020.

SM: Blunt bob haircut is going to be huge in the upcoming year. For long-haired beauties, it’s going to be one length up to the waist, instead of layers.

Caramel-brown is going to be the trending hair colour of 2020. Red and dark chocolate brown are going to be the ultimate hair colours for people who love drama.
