Being under lockdown for months on end has taught us many lessons, but the most important one is how to care for our skin while also being mindful about the amount of waste our routine generates. Right from researching the various ingredients that constitute a product to looking for cleaner and greener alternatives, we are already on track to build a sustainable beauty routine.
But if you are still on the fence or have absolutely no clue about where to start, then DW, because we know how to help you there. We’ve listed down four easy-to-follow sustainable beauty habits that you should adopt sooner than later. Check ‘em out.
- 01. Make mindful purchases
- 02. Use multi-functional products
- 03. Read the ingredients carefully
- 04. Try to upcycle
01. Make mindful purchases
How many times have you purchased a beauty product only to never use it or discard a half-empty product? Yep, thought so. Many of us have the habit of buying too many products (‘cause FOMO) and not using them. Your unused products keep piling up in the landfills, thus generating more waste. Hence, be more mindful when buying a product. If there’s a product you regularly use, try and buy bigger bottles instead of buying the smaller ones. This way you’ll be saving money and the environment, both. Additionally, you could even gift unused beauty products (that are still far from expiry) to your friends and family instead of discarding them.
02. Use multi-functional products
Instead of getting a different product for every step in your makeup routine, you could look for multi-purpose products. For example, instead of buying lipstick and blush, you can opt for the Lakme 9 to 5 Weightless Mousse Lip and Cheek Colour. This 2-in-1 product can be used as lipstick as well as a cream blush. Similarly, the Lakmé 9 to 5 Primer + Matte Perfect Cover Foundation comes with an in-built primer, saving you both time and money.
03. Read the ingredients carefully
Instead of buying just about any beauty product simply because your favourite influencer recommended it, spare some time and read up on the product to see what has actually gone into the product. Avoid products with harmful ingredients such as parabens, silicones and artificial fragrances. You could also look for products that come in recycled plastic, glass or metal packaging. Opt for brands like Love Beauty and Planet that make vegan, cruelty-free products free from nasties like dyes, silicones and parabens, and come in 100% recycled plastic bottles.
04. Try to upcycle
Every time you throw away a plastic bottle, remember that it is adding to the waste and landfills, which harms the environment. While products with a glass or metal packaging is always better, we think it would be quite fun to reuse and upcycle all the plastic bottles you already own. For example, you could decorate old shampoo bottles and use them as DIY planters or store your makeup brushes in them.
