One of the oldest forms of eyeliner is the pencil eyeliner, which is still available in the market and preferred by a lot of makeup artists and bloggers. Why, you ask? Well because unlike gel and liquid eyeliners that can get quite messy, pencil eyeliner is easier to play with, if you know how to use them the right way that is.

To help you apply your pencil eyeliner like a pro, we’ve listed a step-by-step guide that will teach you how to use this makeup bag staple for an effortless look.

how to use a pencil eyeliner1

Step 01: Sharpen it

A blunt tip will never give you the precision you’re looking for (unless it’s a smudged eye look you’re aiming for). Start by sharpening your pencil eyeliner. Make sure you are using the right size; don’t make it too pointy as that can hurt your eyes. Retractable eyeliner pencils like the Lakme Absolute Forever Silk Eyeliner will save you the trouble of sharpening.

Step 02: Keep it taut

Gently hold your skin (do not tug or pull), so that the skin on your eyelids becomes firm while you apply the pencil eyeliner. Simply placing your finger on the end of the brow to hold your skin taut should do the trick.

Step 03: Create a few dots

Instead of going for one sleek stroke, work your way by placing small dots along your lash line where you would like to apply your liner. Simply connect the dots for a flawless and smooth line.

Step 04: Touch up

Even after connecting the dots if you see blank spaces or realise you’ve gone beyond the desired point, correct it. To correct an overdrawn eyeliner, simply dip a Q-tip in the Simple Kind To Skin Micellar Cleansing Water and wipe off the excess. If you’ve left any blank spaces, gently fill them in.

Step 05: Waterline

You can leave it at the lash line if that is the look you’re after or apply the pencil eyeliner to the waterline as well for a bolder look.
