I Swapped My Black Liner For 3 Different Colours And Now I Am Wondering Why I Didn’t Do It Sooner

I swapped my black liner for 3 different colours and now I am wondering why I didn’t do it sooner

I am that girl who’d rather stick to her classic black eyeliner and nude lip colour (yes, I’ve been unapologetically rocking the look since 2013) than try out a daring, bold makeup trend that just made its way into the beauty world. In other words, I am a makeup minimalist. There is a foundation sitting in my drawer for the last three months and the only time I used it was for a wedding.

Don’t get me wrong though; I love makeup. For me, new beauty trends are exciting, obviously, but they are definitely not something I’d wear to work or even on a night out. I’m usually quite content envying those who try out trends and pull them off effortlessly. But it’s just not for me… that was until the coloured eyeliner trend literally took over Instagram!

While scrolling through my Instagram feed, I noticed everyone from celebrities to bloggers lining their peepers with colourful strokes, and that got me intrigued.

This was a makeup trend that I could totally try out. For one, it was a subtle take on colourful eye makeup (adding a pop of colour to the face in the most minimalist way), and secondly, I am an eye makeup person, okay. I love a good eye makeup look and I simply can’t do without my liner!

So I decided to give this trend a go and (finally) ditched my black liner for not one, but three coloured liners. I wore them to work, a party and brunch and was surprised to see how they looked.

Look #1: Green liner

Look #3: Red liner

So, the first colour I tried on was a green liner, which matched perfectly with my olive green shirt. I had the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal - Regal Green in my drawer that I mostly used for a quick green smokey eye, but never tried wearing it as a liner, especially to work, until now. It is a very dark (almost black) green, so I didn’t feel like I was going to attract any odd looks. And right enough, I didn’t. What I did attract though, were a lot of compliments. Turns out Indian skin tones are made for green and particularly this one. I paired the green eyeliner with a pink lip colour and silver hoops and it definitely made for a winning look.

Look #2: Blue and black double liner

Look #3: Red liner

Okay, so after the green liner, I got really into this whole coloured eyeliner trend and decided to take this experiment a notch higher. I played up my eye makeup with two liners--one, a royal blue and the other, my regular black. Double liner has been a huge trend, so for brunch with my friends, I decided to work the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal - Royal Blue and then went on to draw a thin stroke of my black liner right on top of it. I paired it with a nude lip (of course) and let my eyes do all the talking. I’ll let you decide: yay or nay?

Look #3: Red liner

Look #3: Red liner

Now, the third look was a task. I wanted to team my red dress with a red liner, but I didn’t have any. I’m not big on experimental looks, remember? So, I did some scrolling on the internet and stumbled upon a genius hack. I got my red liquid lipstick to do double duty as a liner (IKR). I used the Lakme 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip & Cheek Color - Crimson Silk and an angled brush to draw a crisp line along my upper lid and voila! Pretty risque and out of my comfort zone, but I have to say, I liked the result!

This experiment really helped me break out of my makeup rut and I loved all three of my looks. It was really exciting trying a different makeup look every day (and the pool of compliments didn’t hurt either). Although black liner is still bae, I think I’m now open to a little experimentation in the makeup department. Next up, neon eye makeup? Umm... maybe.
