If there is one way to ace that perfect pout, then it has to be with a lip liner. But the key is in the application. Do it right, and you have a beautiful, luscious pout; do it wrong, and you will easily transport yourself back to the 90s; an era of lip makeup we’d all like to forget.

Yes, wearing a lip liner is extremely important when it comes to making your lips look Priyanka Chopra-esque. It not only helps define your pout, but it also keeps your lipstick from feathering and smudging. This is a major plus if you love wearing bold and bright lipstick shades. You won’t have to worry about  your lips looking unattractive after a few hours. Much like a primer for your makeup, when used correctly, a lip liner extends the wear time of your lipstick, minimising the need for touch ups. Now isn’t that reason #1 to start wearing a lip liner already?

But if you are a lip liner noob, then we are here to help. So, get your lip liner and lipstick ready as this step-by-step guide will make your lipstick application look absolutely flawless.

liner for fuller lips

Step 01: If you want your lipstick to go on smoothly, you must regularly scrub your lips and apply a lip balm beforehand. Blot your lips with a tissue before moving on to the next step.

Step 02: Start by drawing an ‘X’ with your lip liner on your Cupid’s bow, the peak of your upper lip. This will make the Cupid’s bow look sharp and add some dimension to your upper lip.

Step 03: Once the X is in place, slightly part your lips and extend the X shape outwards working your way towards to the corner of your lips. Be careful while doing this as you don’t want to go overboard.

Step 04: Continue lining along the bottom of your lips too, matching the upper lip.

Step 05: Next, completely fill in your lips with the lip liner to create a base for your lip colour. This is what will help your lip colour cling to your lips and stay on longer.

Step 06: Apply a matching lipstick shade on top, either straight from the bullet or using a lip brush for extra precision.
