Synthetic vs natural makeup brushes. Know the difference

When it comes to makeup, we are spoilt for choice. There is no dearth of options when it comes to picking makeup products. The same goes for makeup brushes too.

The two main categories of makeup brushes available are natural and synthetic. If you’re a beauty noob and know nothing about the difference between the two, fret not ‘cause we’re here to help you out. Scroll below to know the difference between natural and synthetic brushes, including pros and cons.

You’re welcome!

Natural brushes

Synthetic brushes

As the name suggests, natural brushes are made using hair and fur of animals like boars, squirrel and goats. They are usually dark in colour, but the colour can vary from one animal to the other. They are the best choice for powder-based products and help achieve a smooth, natural finish.

  • Long-lasting

The durability of natural brushes is far better than that of synthetic ones. If you are looking for a long-term investment, natural brushes should be your go-to.

  • Softer and fluffier

Since they are made of natural fur, these brushes are softer and fluffier. It also helps blend the product into the skin with minimum efforts.

  • Animal welfare

Those in favour of cruelty-free products often avoid using natural brushes, since how the bristles are obtained and how the animals are cared for is not clear. Also, they are generally pricier than synthetic ones.

  • Can cause allergic reaction

Some people are allergic to the fur of certain animals. Using a makeup brush made of animal hair can cause an allergic reaction.

Synthetic brushes

Synthetic brushes

Synthetic brushes use no form of natural hair or fur and are made using manmade fibres such as nylon. If a brush looks flatter than your average makeup brush then the bristles are synthetic.

  • Easy to work with

Synthetic brushes work like magic with liquid and cream products. The way they are shaped ensures precise application of makeup products and gives a smooth finish.

  • Simple to clean

Since synthetic brushes don’t have a cuticle that natural hair normally would, they invite less dirt and bacteria. They are simple to clean and dry faster too, meaning they are low maintenance.

  • Picks more product

Synthetic brushes are not very great when it comes to blending and can end up giving a streaky finish. However, this is slowly changing and superior quality brushes are now available that offer the same results as natural brushes.

  • Tricky to use with powder products

Synthetic brushes and powder products don’t work well together. Powder products such as eyeshadow, blusher and bronzer don’t stick that well to these type of brushes.
