It seems makeup trends like to cover both ends of the aesthetic spectrum at all times… minimal ‘no-makeup’ makeup looks and OTT embellishment makeup — both being equally sought after by makeup enthusiasts. We know because versions of both of these trends keep popping up on our Insta feed, especially the bejewelled and embellished looks being some of the most artistic pieces of work we’ve seen in a while. Earlier reserved for just editorials, content creators are diving deep into this makeup technique and turning their faces into canvases.

It’s not like these looks popped out of nowhere; we’ve seen celebs sport diamante, glitters, rhinestones, sequins, and other non-cosmetic embellishments on some of the most major red carpets events. Even our very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra Jonas flaunted an embellished makeup look with her 2019 MET Gala ensemble. The trend was further pushed into the spotlight with shows like Euphoria where the young cast was put into fabulous, wild and eccentric makeup looks. The show raked up quite a few awards for its makeup design, cementing the status of artsy makeup as a legit force to be reckoned with.

It isn’t just traditional, skin-safe embellishments that creators are experimenting with. You can also spot floral arrangements, pearly beadings, crystals and several other materials that are not easy to glue on a human face. If you do wish to recreate these looks, we suggest you get the proper tools, starting with non-comedogenic and skin-safe makeup adhesive, and a tweezer. You also need to figure out the proper placement to avoid looking like a big ol’ mess. A simple trick would be to mark the placements on your face with a coloured kohl pencil so that you have a slight idea as to what the final look would be like.

Bejewelled makeup is definitely one of the trickiest trends we’ve spoken about till date. It takes more prep than the rest, a lot of moxie to wear and post about, and the biggest challenge — removing it in a safe way so as to not hurt your skin. Fortunately, there are many innovative products in the market that treat your skin with the utmost care. And if you are still iffy about the whole thing, here are some handy tips to keep in mind while removing face embellishments:
- Avoid tugging or pulling the jewels while removing them, it can lead to some micro-tear on the surface of your skin.
- Use an oil-based makeup remover like the Lakme Absolute Bi-Phased Make-up Remover and hold it over the glue to break it down. You might also have to invest in some isopropyl alcohol to help with any tricky blobs of glue that won’t budge.
- Follow this up with a gentle foaming cleanser like the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel and a hydrating moisturiser like the Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser to prevent irritation and keep your skin smooth and supple!
