As a makeup enthusiast and beauty writer, I come across many weird beauty tips or myths daily. It makes me stop and wonder if they actually work. Sometimes I have to try them out to dismiss them as myths. However, a few of them did take me by surprise over the years; remember when we discovered that red lipstick can be used as a colour corrector?

Lately, another question that has been on my mind is: will keeping nail polish in the refrigerator prolong its life and keep the colour intact? Or will my nail paints be sitting beside that box of chocolates for no reason?

Should you keep nail polish in the fridge

To get answers to these questions, I decided to first find out where this theory emerged. Nail polishes should never be kept at a place where direct sunlight falls as this can cause discolouration. Secondly, your room’s fluctuating temperature can change your nail polish’s consistency, making it thick or too tricky to use. But will storing it in the refrigerator help?

Since it's a cool and dark place, chances are, the colour and consistency will remain intact. However, where you store it in the fridge is also essential. If you wish to use your favourite shade of nail paint for a longer time, make sure you don’t put in the deep freezer or the vegetable shelf. Place it besides the egg tray or next to your chocolate box in an upright position. When you want to use it, remove from the fridge and let it come to room temperature to get a smooth and even application. You can even roll the bottle in between your palms to warm it.

Not comfortable with the idea of storing your makeup along with your food? No worries. Simply keep it in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, and that should work too. It’s really a matter of preference.
